ii) To agree appointment to SACRE membership (Keith Harkiss, NASUWT)
iii) Recruitment of SACRE Chair (succession planning wef Jan 2025)
- Document i4 iii SACRE Chair Job Description 19 Jul 2024
However despite successful recruitment in the areas mentioned above, Members were requested to note the resignation of Bedad Teimoori and his substitute, Mrs Teimoori, from the Buddhist Community and the Chair commented that he would reach out on behalf of all Members of Sacre, thanking them for their service and enquiring if there were any other representatives from the community who would wish to sit.
Looking ahead to the future, the Chair, Bob Kiddle referred to his intention to stand down from his position as Chair on the Committee in the coming months. Whilst he had hugely enjoyed taking on the position, he felt now it was time for someone else to take this on and give new blood to the role and the Committee. He was, however, happy to remain n the Committee and contribute to the work of the SACRE in Doncaster. It was reported that a job description for the position would be created and would go out to advert in order to recruit a successful candidate. All Members od the Committee were encouraged to think about stepping into the role and additionally, to reach out to their respective faith groups and local communities if there were any individuals that they felt would be a strong and successful Chair.
RESOLVED that the Membership update for the Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education be noted.
Members noted, that considerable discussion had taken place, with the Committee given a wealth of information on the processes followed in working to appoint a new provider of a syllabus for Religious Education in Doncaster Schools.
There had been positive discussions, with SACRE giving their support to the proposals put forward by Officers and it was hoped that the preferred new provider would be appointed in due course.
RESOLVED that the update be noted.
RESOLVED that the update be noted, and Members would contact the Chair, Bob Kiddle with regard to assisting in their relevant areas of the report.
- Document Ofsted report - Main Findings and Recommendations 19 Jul 2024
- Document Doncaster SACRE Update Summer 2024 19 Jul 2024
Members attention was drawn to the following points: -
· Ofsted report on Religious Education
· New toolkit produced to support delivery of RE
· GCSE figures had risen in schools Nationally, whereas the number of students taking A-Level RE had fallen.
· NASACRE Webinar information was provided.
Members also received an update with regard to the standard of RE in schools and where success was achieved, and problems faced. Ian informed the Committee that RE Today’s findings implied that the RE Curriculum in schools across the country laced the substance to support children in a very complex world, and improvements were required in order to ensure that children had the tools to live in multi religious and multi secular society.
One point that Members noted was that many teachers in schools had not received subject-based professional development in this area and given the complexity of the subject was recommended. The paper presented to Members by Ian Nicholson provided a number of recommendations for schools nationally, in order to bring about improvements in the teaching of religious education.
RESOLVED that the update be noted.
